Начало двадцатого века для Канады было периодом массового заселения эмигрантами из стран Европы и, в частности, из Австро-Венгрии. Среди эмигрантов были русины из Галичины и Буковины. Канадское правительство и эмиссары обещали всем вновь прибывшим равноправное гражданство, выделение участков земли, труд на предприятиях и железной дороге, а также хорошую жизнь в будущем. С началом войны (август 1914 г.) были организованы почти три десятка концентрационных лагерей, где удерживались выходцы из Австро-Венгрии. В 1914-1920 гг. галичане, буковинцы (русины), хотя они и приехали в Канаду по приглашению правительства как поселенцы первой волны эмиграции, поддавались разного рода репрессиям. Благодаря публикациям в печати, издании книг в конце ХХ и в начале ХХІ ст. стало известно всему миру о страдании, притеснениях и интернированиях русинов из Австро-Венгрии на протяжении 1914-1920 годов. В начале ХХІ в. в память об интернировании везде по Канаде установлены памятные доски и мемориалы. В 2005-ом году Премьер-министр Канады Пол Мартин признал интернирование украинцев темной страницей истории Канады. Правительство Канады предоставило 2,5 млн. долларов на финансирование памятных мероприятий и образовательных программ, связанных с интернированием. В 2008 г. был создан правительственный Канадский Фонд Признания Интернирования во время Первой мировой войны. Совет Фонда включает представителей тех этнически-культурных общин, которые пострадали в результате интернирования. Фонд поддерживает образовательные и мемориальные мероприятия, которые чествуют память пострадавших и напоминают всем канадцам о потребности быть пристальными в обороне общественных свобод и человеческих прав, особенно во время национальных и международных кризисов.

Beginning of the twentieth century for Canada was the period of the mass settling by emigrants from the countries of Європи and, in particular from Austria-Hungary. Among emigrants there were Ruthenians from Galychina and Bukovyna. The Canadian government and encouraging emissaries promised all newly arrived equal in rights citizenship, practically безоплатне selection of areas to earth, labour on enterprises and lick off these and good life in the future. As Great Britain was at war with Austria-Hungary, citizens, natives from the last, were considered the «enemies of country», id est, Canada. With beginning of war ( in 1914) almost three ten of relocation centers were organized, where natives held out from Austria-Hungary. On a draught 1914- 1920 Galychina, Bukovyna (Ruthenians), although they arrived to Canada on invitation of government as settlers of the first wave of emigration, yielded different family to the repressions. Due to publication in printing, edition of books in the end ХХ and at the beginning ХХІ of century it knew to the whole world about suffering, oppressions and internments of Ruthenians from Austria-Hungary on a draught 1914-1920. At the beginning ХХІ of century in memory about internment everywhere on Canada memorable boards and memorials are set. In 2005th prime Minister of Canada Paul Martin admitted internment of Ukrainians the dark page of history of Canada. The government of Canada gave 2,5 million dollars on financing of memorable events and educational programs related to internment. The government of Canada created in 2008 Canadian Fund of Confession of Internment in the First World War-time. Advice of Fund includes the representatives of those ethnically-cultural groups.
